The vice president of Nicaragua says he will resign his post and run in next year's presidential elections.
In an exclusive interview with VOA's Spanish branch Tuesday, Jose Rizo Castellon said he plans to make an official announcement later this week. Mr. Rizo says he is complying with the nation's constitution, which stipulates he leave political office one year ahead of general elections, slated for November 2006.
Mr. Rizo denounced efforts by former Presidents Daniel Ortega and Arnoldo Aleman to remove President Enrique Bolanos before the end of his term, calling the move "anti-democratic."
The vice president also voiced concern Mr. Ortega may win if he ran in the presidential election, saying it would "definitely destabilize" all of Central America.
