A 31-year-old Norwegian man has been killed in an attempt to parachute off the Eiffel tower, after his equipment became entangled in the metal structure.

Police did not identify the victim, but said he was one of three Norwegians who had planned to film the jump late Monday.

Authorities say he jumped from the second level of the 324-meter-high Paris landmark, planning to descend safely to the ground. But after experiencing the problem with his equipment he fell directly to the first deck, and was killed on impact. Police are investigating the incident.

Authorities have banned attempts to parachute from the tower, which has been the scene of numerous jumps by daredevils as well as people seeking to commit suicide.
