|Mukhtar Mai, victim of a gang rape, sheds tears after a court's decision in Multan, Pakistan|
A government statement Wednesday says that on the instruction of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, the name of Mukhtaran Mai has been removed from the government's travel restriction list, and that she is free to go anywhere.
Officials said Saturday that Ms. Mai had been put on the list for her own protection.
Ms. Mai was gang-raped on the orders of a village council in Punjab province in 2002 because of her brother's alleged affair with a woman from a powerful tribe.
Last week, a court in eastern Pakistan ordered the release of 12 men detained in connection with the rape. Ms. Mai has said she plans to appeal the decision.
