The Palestinian parliament has approved the government proposed by Hamas, clearing the way for the Islamic militant group to take office.

Lawmakers voted on the Cabinet Tuesday, one day after Prime Minister-designate Ismail Haniyeh presented his government. The approval was expected because Hamas holds a majority in the parliament.

On Monday, Mr. Haniyeh called on the Quartet of mediators - the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations - to help reach peace in the Middle East. But he added his militant group will not disarm or recognize Israel.

U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack says Hamas must take those steps before it can take part in talks.
