Italian rider Davide Rebellin took second place, two seconds back, just ahead of Spaniard Xavier Florencio, who was credited with the same time.

Valverde retained his 27-second overall lead ahead of Andrey Kashechkin of Kazakhstan. Carlos Sastre is in third place, 44 seconds back. The stage was the first after Monday's rest day and ahead of another hilly stage on Wednesday.
