Protesters in Moscow have rallied against the war in Chechnya.

The Interfax news agency says up to 1,000 people took part in Saturday's demonstration.

Russian forces have been fighting separatists in Chechnya for most of the past decade.  The conflict has devastated the southern republic.

Also, today marks the second anniversary of when Chechen separatists seized a crowded theater in Moscow, beginning a 60-hour crisis that claimed 129 lives.

Most of the fatalities were from the gas Russian authorities pumped into the theater during rescue operations.

Chechen separatists have been blamed for numerous terrorist attacks, including the seizing of a school in Beslan in September and the downing of two airliners in August.

Those attacks claimed more than 430 lives.
