Meanwhile, the head of Bolivia's armed forces, Admiral Luis Aranda, has rejected remarks by two other military officers who are calling for President Carlos Mesa to step down. Admiral Aranda is vowing to punish them and denies the military is preparing for a coup.
The street demonstrations were triggered after a bill to increase taxes on foreign oil companies became law. Opponents want higher taxes on the companies than those called for in the legislation.
