Yemeni officials say at least 47 people have been killed in heavy rains and severe flooding that has swept through the south of the country.

Officials say the storms have left hundreds of people stranded this week, and have damaged homes in at least two southeastern provinces, including Hadramut.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has flown to Hadramut province to oversee rescue efforts.

Weather forecasters say the storms are likely to continue for several days.
