The United States Coast Guard says rescuers are searching for the six people who were on a small plane that crashed into the waters off Puerto Rico on Sunday.

Police say witnesses reported seeing an explosion on the Cessna 206 before it fell into the Atlantic Ocean off the island's northern coast.

Authorities say the group was flying from La Romana in the Dominican Republic to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The pilot and all five passengers were U.S. citizens.
