Spain and Sweden are early winners in opening round play at the 2008 European football Championships co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland.

David Villa scored three goals for a hat trick Tuesday to lead Spain to a 4-1 victory over Russia in the opening Group-D match. Villa scored in the 20th, 44th and 75th minutes of the rain-hit match in Innsbruck, Austria.

In Salzburg, Sweden toppled defending champion Greece, 2-0. The Swedes are not considered among the favorites at the 16-team tournament. But the Nordic team was clearly the best in the game, even with seven Greek players from the victorious 2004 squad in the starting lineup.

Greece now finds itself in a difficult position, already three points behind Spain and Sweden.
