Top seed Venus Williams has won the inaugural Istanbul Cup clay-court tennis tournament by beating Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic.

Williams won the first ever meeting between the two players in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Venus is seeded 11th for the French Open and will play Spain's Marta Marrero in the first round. Vaidisova is not seeded and plays a qualifier.

Meanwhile at the Strasbourg International clay court tennis tournament in France, Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues scored a straight-set win over Marta Domachowska of Poland 6-4, 6-3. It was the Spanish player's first tournament win of the year.

These tournaments were both key warm-ups for the second major tournament of the Year, the French Open, which starts Monday in Paris.
