An Egyptian ship carrying thousands of Muslim pilgrims has collided with a cargo ship near the Suez Canal, killing two people and injuring 20 others.

Egyptian officials say rescue boats were sent to rescue more than 1,400 passengers from the Egyptian boat. They said the passenger vessel sank shortly after the collision.

The mostly Egyptian pilgrims were returning from a visit to Islamic holy sites in Saudi Arabia.
