Protests across the Arab World: Algeria
In January, riots sparked by high food prices and unemployment killed at least five people and injured hundreds. The day after pro-democracy protesters drove Egypt's longtime leader Hosni Mubarak from power on February 11, Algerians were in the streets demanding their own President Abdelaziz Bouteflika leave office.
On February 17, Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia announced the country's 19-year-old state of emergency will be lifted by the end of the month.
On February 22, Algeria's Cabinet formally approved an order to lift the country's 19-year-old state of emergency.
