The US-Afghan Bilateral Security Agreement signed Sept. 30

  • Provides for 9,800 U.S. troops to stay in Afghanistan from 2015 through 2024
  • Focuses on training Afghan security forces and curbing al-Qaida
  • Allows U.S. to carry out counter-terrorism operations in the country
  • Reduces total NATO troops (including U.S.) in Afghanistan to 12,000, from a peak of 130,000 in 2012
