The U.S. military says it is charging one of its soldiers with the murder of a civilian contractor in northern Iraq.

Specialist Beyshee Velez was charged Monday for fatally shooting an American man earlier this month at a military base in Tikrit.

Velez could face life imprisonment and a dishonorable discharge if found guilty.  He is being held in the U.S. state of Hawaii.

The military has not released details of the shooting at Camp Speicher.

The victim Lucas Vinson was employed by the largest contractor for the U.S. army in Iraq.  The company, KBR, provides meals, housing services, mail delivery and laundry for U.S. military bases in Iraq.

Also in northern Iraq Wednesday, authorities say attacks in and around the city of Mosul killed an Iraqi policeman and a soldier and wounded three other security force members.
