Concern is growing for an American crew member aboard one of the yachts competing in the Volvo Ocean Race, after he fell seriously ill in a remote part of the Southern Ocean.

The doctor aboard the Amer Sports One told race organizers Wednesday that 40-year-old Keith Kilpatrick has developed a stomach illness. He is being treated with antibiotics and morphine and is on a saline drip.

But with the limited medical facilities on the yacht running low, the Australian Maritime Rescue Coordination Center has been alerted and the Australian Coastguard has been asked for assistance. The boat has also been in regular contact with medical advisers in England. The yacht is about 1500 nautical miles southwest of Australia and is out of range for an airborne medical evacuation, but Australian authorities are looking at all options to assist Kilpatrick. The nearest competing yacht is 155 nautical miles away.
