The Connecticut Sun defeated the host Detroit Shock, 73-62, in the opening game of their Women's National Basketball Association playoff series.

Nykesha Sales scored 19 points and Taj McWilliams-Franklin added 14 points and nine rebounds Wednesday for Connecticut in Game 1 of the first-round, best-of-three games series. The Sun had a balanced attack with Katie Douglas, Lindsay Whalen and Asjha Jones each contributing 13 points. Connecticut shot 46 percent from the field and held Detroit to 35 percent.

Deanna Nolan scored 14 points and Katie Smith added 13 for the Shock, who dropped the opening game of the first round at home for the second straight year. Game 2 is Friday in Connecticut, which will also host the decisive Game 3 if needed.
