US Immigration Laws State by State

A day after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down most of the state of Arizona's controversial immigration law, we look at similar legislation aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration in other U.S. states.

Since Arizona passed its law in 2010, more than two dozen states have considered Arizona-inspired immigration laws. Like Arizona, many states have also mandated the use of E-Verify - an online system run through the Social Security Administration and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services that allows employers to confirm the immigration status of workers.

States that have passed Arizona-inspired laws:

Alabama: Mandatory E-verify for all employees, inspired by Arizona bill. Requires verification of immigration status for public benefits. Partially blocked by lawsuits.

Georgia: Mandatory E-verify for all employees, inspired by Arizona bill. Requires verification of immigration status for public benefits. Partially blocked by lawsuits.

Indiana: Mandatory E-verify for public agencies inspired by Arizona bill. Mandatory E-verify for state contractors. Requires verification of immigration status for public benefits. Partially blocked by lawsuits.

South Carolina: Mandatory E-verify for all employees inspired by Arizona bill was halted. Laws partially blocked by lawsuits. Requires verification of immigration status for public benefits.

Utah: Mandatory E-verify for all employees. Legislation inspired by Arizona bill passed but enforcement has been blocked by lawsuits. Requires verification of immigration status for public benefits.
