One of the biggest winter storms ever to hit Washington has covered the northeastern United States with up to 50 centimeters of snow, and even more in some areas. More than 24 hours of continuous heavy snow, combined with below-freezing temperatures and gale-force winds shut down almost all transportation and commerce and forced most people to stay in their homes.
