There was a major break in tradition in Tanzania. New president, John Magufuli, joined hundreds of residents in Dar es Salaam to participate in a public clean-up operation instead of the usual festive Independence Day celebrations. January Makamba, a parliamentarian and member of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party also participated in the operation. Earlier, VOA's Vincent Makori spoke with him by phone from Dar es Salaam and asked him about the significance of Mr. Magufuli's actions.
