Spain says four suspected members of the Basque separatist group ETA have been arrested in France and Portugal, including one driving a van loaded with explosives.

Authorities say two of the suspects arrested in northern Portugal late Saturday near the Spanish border were also carrying weapons and forged documents.

Separately, French police arrested a man and woman who were forced to stop their vehicle in bad weather near the central city of Clermont-Ferrand.

Authorities allege the suspects were attempting to access a weapons stash that police had under surveillance.

ETA has killed more than 825 people since the late 1960s in its push for an independent Basque state in northern Spain and southwestern France.  The group marked its 50th anniversary in 2009.
