3 Americans Killed in Afghan Insider Attack

Three Americans, two soldiers and a civilian, have been killed by a man wearing an Afghan army uniform, the latest in a series of insider attacks by Afghan soldiers on coalition troops.

International Security Assistance Force officials say the attack took place Saturday at an Afghan army base in the eastern province of Paktika.

Provincial officials say an argument between the Afghan soldier and his American trainers appeared to spark the shooting, which wounded three other Americans. Coalition forces returned fire and killed the Afghan soldier.

Previous reports said all three of those killed were soldiers.

ISAF officials also say there has been one arrest in connection with the shooting and that the army base has been secured.

Insider attacks, cases where those in Afghan military or police uniforms turn their guns on their international allies, have become more frequent. They threaten to undermine the trust between both sides, as coalition troops prepare to hand over control to Afghan security forces.

Also Saturday, Italian officials say an Italian soldier was killed and three others wounded in a grenade attack on their armored vehicle in the western province of Farah.
