Philippine Communist Rebels Deny Terror Links

Philippine communist rebels have denied allegations by President Gloria Arroyo that they are linked to foreign terrorist groups.

Ms. Arroyo made the claim Tuesday after ordering a review of the government's strategy for addressing the long-running communist insurgency. She said officials found evidence of such a link, but did not elaborate.

A rebel spokesman said the allegations are unfounded, and accused the government of trying to sabotage peace talks with the militants.

The Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People's Army, have staged a 35-year insurgency in the Philippines. The United States has declared both groups terror organizations.
