Separatists Warn of Backlash Over Thai Riot Deaths

update

A Muslim separatist group is warning of a violent backlash over the deaths of some 84 people during protests Monday in southern Thailand.

The Pattani United Liberation Organization issued the warning on its Internet website.

Wednesday, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra promised an investigation into the incident, which has brought widespread international outrage, particularly in majority Muslim countries.

Seventy-eight of the victims suffocated after police packed them into trucks for transportation to a detention center. Six others died in clashes with police.

The protesters were demanding the release of six security guards accused of giving their weapons to militants.
