Star golfer Vijay Singh of Fiji is seeking an amazing 10th title of 2004 as the U.S. PGA tour concludes its season this week.
Not since American Ben Hogan in 1948, has a golfer won 10 tournaments on the PGA Tour. Vijay Singh will try to reach that milestone at the season-ending Tour Championship (being played Thursday through Sunday) in Atlanta.
After winning the Chrysler Championship last Sunday in Florida, Singh broke the single-year prize money record held by American Tiger Woods. The Fiji star became the first golfer to surpass the $10 million mark in winnings. With a finish of fourth or better at the Tour Championship, which features only the top 30 money winners of the season, Singh's 2004 earnings would surpass $11 million.
Most of his earnings have come in the past few months. Singh has won a remarkable six times in his last eight PGA Tour events. Even he has had a hard time believing how well he has played.
"The second half of the season has been incredible," he said. "You know, the wins just keep coming, and I'm just enjoying every bit of it."
With his success his second half of the season, Vijay Singh took over the number one world ranking from American Tiger Woods, who had held the lofty spot for a record 264 weeks.
