Golf: Lehman Named 2006 Ryder Cup Team Captain

Former British Open golf champion Tom Lehman has been named the U.S. Ryder Cup team captain for 2006, as the U.S. team seeks to recover from this year's devastating loss to Europe.

At the announcement of his selection Wednesday, Lehman called the Ryder Cup the ultimate golf experience. He said one of the greatest moments of his career was being part of the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

PGA of America officials said they might revamp the team selection process to make sure the U.S. team has the 10 best players. Lehman offered his services after Europe beat the Americans 18 ½ to 9 ½ this year at Oakland Hills in Michigan, the U.S. team's worst loss in Ryder Cup history.

The 2006 Ryder Cup will be played September 22-26 at the K Club in Straffan, Dublin, Ireland. Since 1985, Europe has retained the Cup in seven of 10 matches.
