Namibian Human Rights Activist Considers Arafat's Legacy

update

For a look at Mr. Arafat’s legacy, English to Africa reporter Joe De Capua spoke to Phil Ya Nangoloh, head of the Namibian National Society for Human Rights.

From Windhoek, he spoke about Mr. Arafat’s long reign as Palestinian leader. He says Mr. Arafat has made many enemy and friends over the years.

He agrees that many Africans sympathize with the Palestinian cause because they also see themselves as “underdogs.”

Mr. Ya Nangoloh says while Mr. Arafat was a stabilizing factor in one regard, he probably failed to act on a number of opportunities for peace.

He also says the Palestinian leader failed to groom a successor, so it’s unclear how the various militant Palestinian groups will respond.
