Villagers Evacuated From Volcanic Papua New Guinea Island

update

Local media in Papua New Guinea report thousands of villagers living near a volcano are being evacuated after a major eruption spewed ash at least 10 kilometers into the air.

The reports say at least 9,000 people are being evacuated from Manam island.

Papua New Guinea officials say Tuesday's eruption polluted water sources and destroyed gardens. Five injuries have been reported.
