Tennis: US to Host Croatia in Opening Round of Davis Cup

The United States will host Croatia in the opening round of the 2005 Davis Cup tennis tournament.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced Thursday the games will be played on the hardcourts at Carson, California near Los Angeles. The three-day tie (series) beginning on March 4 could be the start of a title defense for the American squad. The United States faces host Spain starting Friday in the Davis Cup final on clay at Seville. The United States is trying to win its first Davis Cup crown since 1995.

In the only previous Davis Cup match between the countries, Croatia defeated the US squad, 4-1, in a 2003 first-round tie at Zagreb. The winner will face either Romania or Belarus in the second round next July.
