Williams Wins Australian Open Women's Title

update

American Serena Williams rallied to beat world number one Lindsay Davenport to win the women's championship at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.

Williams recovered from losing the first set to win 10 consecutive games to defeat top seeded fellow-American Davenport in a three set match, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. Seventh seed Williams received treatment on the sidelines for a minor back injury while trailing 4-1 in the first set.

Her victory ends an 18-month drought without a major title.

Saturday's victory is Serena Williams' seventh career Grand Slam title and her second Australian Open championship. She won the event in 2003, then missed defending her title in 2004 due to a knee injury.

Davenport won the Australian Open in 2000.

The men's final is Sunday, with third seeded Australian Lleyton Hewitt taking on fourth seed Marat Safin of Russia. Hewitt is the first Australian in 17 years to play for the men's title.
