Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tees Off Thursday

World number one golfer Vijay Singh of Fiji is set to defend his title at the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in California.

The tournament begins Thursday and is played on three different courses throughout the four rounds - Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hills. All are par 72.

Amateurs are paired with professionals in this event. The amateur many fans will be following is Bill Belichick, the coach who just guided the New England Patriots to the NFL's Super Bowl championship. For the opening round, Belichick is paired with American Larry Mize and has a handicap of 16 strokes that will factor into his score.

Vijay Singh's toughest competition is expected to come from Phil Mickelson who is coming off a win in the FBR Open in Arizona. That victory moved the American Masters champion up one spot to fourth in the world rankings.
