Brazil Approves Law to Develop Genetically Modified Crops

update

Brazil's lower house of Congress has approved a bill to legalize the use of genetically modified soy seeds.

The move clears the way for the U.S.-based biotechnology firm, Monsanto, to sell the soy seeds in Brazil.

Genetically modified seeds were banned in Brazil, but the use of cloned or smuggled versions of Monsanto's biotech seeds has been widespread by Brazilian farmers.

The Associated Press reports the modified seed bill has already been approved by Brazil's Senate and is expected to be signed into law by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
