Dalai Lama Renews Pledge Not to Seek Tibetan Independence

Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has renewed his pledge not to seek independence for Tibet and expressed willingness allow the region remain within China.

The Buddhist spiritual leader made his comments Thursday in an address marking the 46th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule.

The Nobel laureate said he wants to reassure Chinese authorities that Tibet will not seek independence as long as he has responsibility for Tibetan affairs.

The Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959 after the uprising and established his government-in-exile in the northern Indian hill town of Dharamsala.

Beijing has accused the Buddhist spiritual leader of separatism and demands he definitively give up aspirations for independence.
