War Crimes Court Sentences Ex-Rwandan Official to 6-Year Prison Term

A former Rwandan official has been sentenced to six years in prison by the U.N.-backed war crimes court trying suspects in the nation's 1994 genocide.

Vincent Rutaganira received the shortest prison term handed down by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda under a plea bargaining deal.

Rutaganira, a former councillor in the western province of Kibuye, pleaded guilty to the single charge of complicity by omission in extermination.

He admitted to not saving minority ethnic Tutsis who were slaugtered while seeking refuge in a church and begged for forgiveness.

His sentence is the first to be handed down this year.

Only three other suspects have pleaded guilty for their roles in the massacre of an estimated 800,000 mostly Tutsi Rwandans.
