European Leaders Appeal for Calm in Kyrgyzstan

World leaders are appealing for calm in Kyrgyzstan.

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana Friday called for the people of Kyrgyzstan to act responsibly, ease the restoration of law and order, and refrain from violence.

The chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Dimitrij Rupel, called for a dialogue that would eventually lead to new elections. Mr. Rupel said Friday he discussed the issue late Thursday with the German and Russian foreign ministers, and with the U.S. Secretary of State.

China's Foreign Ministry said it is closely watching the situation, and hopes that Kyrgyzstan can enjoy stability and development that would benefit the country and contribute to peace, stability and development in Central Asia.
