New Polls Indicate Significant Drop in Support For Bush

update

Two new public opinion polls indicate that President Bush's approval ratings have tumbled to among the lowest of his presidency.

A USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll released Thursday indicates that Mr. Bush's approval rating stands at 45 percent, down from 52 percent last week. A CBS News survey found the president's approval rating slipping six points over the past month to 43 percent.

Both polls have error margins of between three and four percent.

Mr. Bush's drop in approval rating comes as polls indicate significant public opposition to congressional and presidential intervention in the Terri Schiavo right-to-die case, as well as opposition to Mr. Bush's proposal to restructure the U.S. retirement system known as Social Security.

The polls also come at a time of growing discontent with rising gasoline prices.
