Insurgents in Iraq have attacked the Abu Ghraib prison, outside Baghdad, injuring at least 18 American soldiers and 12 detainees.
The U.S. military says that between 40 and 60 insurgents detonated two car bombs and then launched rocket-propelled grenades, followed by small arms fire outside the prison Saturday evening. Coalition forces repelled their attack and the prison is reported to be secured.
It is not known whether there were insurgent casualties.
Abu Ghraib houses more than 2,000 detainees. It is notorious for a prisoner abuse scandal that resulted in charges against several U.S. soldiers.
Earlier today, a car bomb explosion killed five people near Baquba.
And in political news, the Iraqi National Assembly is scheduled to meet Sunday to elect a speaker. But politicians say Shi'ite and Sunni leaders are still not able to agree on a Sunni candidate for the post.
