Death Toll from Bangladesh Factory Collapse Rises

Bangladesh fire fighters carry injured worker who was rescued from rubble of garment factory that collapsed at Savar
Rescue workers in Bangladesh have abandoned hope of finding alive any of the more than 100 people still trapped under the rubble of a garment factory building that collapsed Monday.

The rescuers, who have been working around the clock since the collapse in Palashbari, northwest of Dhaka, recovered three more bodies Thursday, bringing the death toll to at least 34.

Anxious relatives, many holding photographs of their missing loved ones, have camped near the site of the accident, believed to have been caused by a boiler explosion.

Local officials have launched an investigation after it emerged that the factory was constructed on marshland without planning permission.

The garment industry is Bangladesh's biggest export sector, employing almost two million workers.
