UN Human Rights Body Urges Nepal to Restore Democracy

The U.N. top human rights body has urged Nepal to restore multi-party democracy and reinstate all civil and political rights suspended after King Gyanendra seized absolute power.

The U.N. Human Rights Commission, holding its annual session in Geneva, also strongly condemned Nepal's Maoist rebels for unlawful killings, rape, forced displacements and mass abductions.

The motion Wednesday replaces a planned tougher resolution, which was dropped after King Gyanendra last week invited the High Commissioner for Human Rights to monitor the rights situation in the Himalayan kingdom.

U.N. monitors will set up regional field offices in Nepal and seek the cooperation of both the security forces and the Maoist rebels to ensure they observe human rights and international laws.
