Blasts Occur Near British Consulate in New York

According to police, two makeshift grenades exploded outside a building that houses the British consulate in New York City Thursday, causing minor damage but no injuries.

Federal and local authorities are questioning a United Nations employee from the Netherlands who was found loitering near the building shortly after the pre-dawn blasts. Officials have refused to say whether the man is considered a suspect.

Police say the blasts were caused by two toy grenades filled with gunpowder. They say the devices were placed in one of the large concrete planters that serve as vehicle barriers for the 14 story building.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said earlier that police have not identified a suspect or a motive in the blasts.

The explosions took place shortly after voting began in Britain's general election.
