Opposition Politician Gunned Down in Dhaka

Unidentified gunmen have shot dead an opposition politician in Bangladesh's capital,

Khorshed Alam was a member of the main opposition Awami League. Police say he was attacked outside his home in central Dhaka.

An Awami League spokesman said passers-by took him to the state-run Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Police say they are investigating the motive. No one has been arrested. Police say dozens of people have died in political violence in the past two years.

The murder prompted dozens of angry opposition activists to smash vehicles in the area to protest the killing. The opposition also plans a general strike in the capital Wednesday to protest the killing.
