Panama Braces for Third Day of Protests

Protesters burned an effigy during a march against the social security reforms in Panama City, Wednesday
Panamanian police in the capital, Panama City, clashed with demonstrators Wednesday in the third straight day of protests against the government's pension reform plans.

Police used tear gas and shotgun blasts to disperse the protesters who hurled bottles and rocks.

The protests since Monday have been organized by opponents of a government proposal to save money in the government pension system through reforms such as requiring an older retirement age. Officials say the pension system is facing a serious budget deficit.

The reforms must still be approved by the Panamanian Congress.
