The horse "Motivator" with Johnny Murtagh astride has won the English Derby, England's most important flat race, by beating French challenger "Walk in the Park" by five lengths at Epsom.
"Motivator," trained by Michael Bell, took the lead early and never surrendered it, while "Walk in the Park," ridden by Frankie Dettori, overtook "Dubwai," who finished third.
The winning time was 2:35.69 minutes over the 2.41-kilometer (one mile, four furlongs) course.
The win was Murtagh's third Derby in his last six tries. Organizers allowed Murtagh to ride after he appealed a two-day suspension for careless riding at Lingfield Park last month. The appeals panel dropped one of the charges and Murtagh was able to ride Saturday.
For Dettori the Derby was another disappointment. The man regarded as England's top jockey has not won a Derby in 13 attempts.
