Mexican Border Town Police Chief Gunned Down

Mexican officials say unknown assailants have shot and killed the newly-appointed police chief of a town near the Mexico-U.S. border.

Witnesses say Alejandro Dominguez was shot at least 30 times in his car late Wednesday. They say gunmen fired at him as they drove by in multiple vehicles.

The killing came just hours after Mr. Dominguez assumed his new position as police chief of Nuevo Laredo. He is at least the third police chief killed in the city in recent weeks.

Law enforcement officials on both sides of the border have identified Nuevo Laredo as a center for drug trafficing and criminal organizations.
