Mexican Authorities Arrest Alleged Pakistani Weapons Trafficker

Mexican authorities have arrested a Pakistani man wanted in the United States for alleged weapons trafficking.

A statement from the Mexican attorney general's office identified the man as Arif Durrani. It said he was arrested Wednesday in Mexico's Baja California state.

Mexican authorities released few details of the case and would not confirm if the man they arrested was the same Arief Durrani convicted in 1987 in the United States for illegally shipping weapons to Iran.

The defendant in that case had claimed to be part of the so-called "Iran-Contra" scandal, which involved secret arms sales to Iran to fund Contra rebels fighting the left wing Nicaraguan government.
