More than 400 right-wing Colombian paramilitary fighters have turned in their weapons as part of a peace deal with the government.
Leader of the United Self-Defense Forces, Diego Murillo, watched Wednesday as fighters laid down rifles and grenades on a soccer field in the northern Cordoba region.
Colombian officials have promised to reintegrate former militiamen who disarm, and say paramilitary leaders may receive reduced sentences, if they are prosecuted.
Some human rights groups have denounced the proposed deal, saying leaders like Mr. Murillo should be punished for alleged crimes.
Mr. Murillo has been under house arrest on murder charges, since surrendering to authorities last month.
The United States has requested the extradition of Mr. Murillo, saying he heads one of the world's chief drug cartels.
