Guinea 's former president Kumba Yala now says he accepts the results that showed he came in third in last week's presidential election.
Earlier, Mr. Yala had declared himself the winner of the June 19 presidential vote, rejecting the official results and accusing the country's election commission of changing the results.
In a statement Monday, Mr. Yala said he won the elections but "in the interest of peace", he would accept the official results.
The commission says Mr. Yala received 25 percent of the vote, placing him third after former military ruler Joao Bernardo Vieira and interim leader Malam Bacai Sanha.
The top two vote-getters will face one another in a run-off election.
International observers have said the election was free and fair.
Mr. Yala was overthrown in a coup in 2003.
