Son of Brazilian Football Legend Pele Moved to High Security Prison

update

Brazilian officials say they have moved the son of football (soccer) legend Pele into a maximum security prison while he awaits trial on drug charges.

The officials say they moved Edson Cholbi Nascimento into the prison Tuesday for his own safety, saying he may have become the target of rival drug gangs in a standard prison.

Mr. Nascimento has been held in a narcotics police detention cell since his arrest on June 6th. He is alleged to have ties with drug traffickers. He has denied the charges, though he has admitted to using drugs.

Police would not reveal the name or location of the new prison.

Mr. Nascimento had played goal keeper for the football team Santos, his father's former team. He retired in 1999.
