Typhoon Leaves 15 Dead in China, Taiwan

Heavy clouds hang over Hangzhou, capital city of east China's Zhejiang Province, as Typhoon Haitang approaches
A typhoon that left at least 15 people dead has been downgraded to a tropical storm after battering Taiwan and southeastern China with heavy rains and powerful winds.

Three of the deaths were reported in China, where Typhoon Haitang slammed into the coastal provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang Tuesday and caused more than one million people to flee their homes.

Typhoon Haitang earlier left a trail of destruction in Taiwan. It washed away roads and caused more than $14 million in damage to the island's agricultural sector.

Taiwanese authorities say the death toll has risen to 12 from four reported earlier.
