Israeli Ex-Soldier Sentenced to 8-Year Prison Term for Killing British Activist

An Israeli military tribunal has sentenced an ex-soldier to eight years in prison for killing a British peace activist two years ago in the Gaza Strip.

Taysir Hayb was convicted of manslaughter in June for shooting Tom Hurndall during an army operation at the Palestinian refugee camp in Rafah. The 22-year-old Briton was a member of the pro-Palestinian International Solidarity Movement.

Tribunal testimony showed Mr. Hurndall was helping Palestinian school children across a roadway to avoid Israeli-Palestinian gunfire when he was shot in the head. The victim, who never regained consciousness, died nine months later in a British hospital.
